Understanding your bill

How do I estimate my next bill?

Your electricity bill is generally made up of four parts:
• Electricity usage
• Standing Charges
• PSO Levy
• VAT

Electricity Usage
To estimate the cost of your usage, you’ll need
• The ‘Present Reading’ from your last bill (found under ‘Usage Details’)
• A current meter reading (taken in the last 3 days).
• Your unit rate (this can be found on your previous bill under ‘Details of Electricity Charges’)

To calculate the cost for your usage, use the following formula:
(Current Meter Reading minus Previous Present Reading) x Unit Rate.

Note: If you are on Day/Night rates, or Day/Night and Peak rates, you will need separate readings for each rate. You will also need to repeat the formula for each rate and reading and add the results to get the total charges.

For example, the result of (Current Day Reading minus Previous Day Reading) x Day unit rate will need to be added to the result of (Current Night Reading minus Previous Night Reading) x Night rate to get the total charges. (repeat for Peak rates if applicable).

Standing Charges

These are calculated by the number of days in your billing period (usually 30 or 60). You can find your current rate for your standing charge on your most recent bill.

PSO Levy
The Public Service Obligation (PSO) levy for electricity has been set at €3.23/€3.52 (ex./inc. VAT) per month from Oct 1 2024. This applies to all domestic electricity customers, irrespective of supplier. If your bill is for a 60 day period, this will be €6.46/€7.04 (ex/incl VAT)

VAT
VAT is currently charged on electricity usage, standing charges and PSO levy at 9%.
Estimating Your Gas Bill

Your gas bill is generally made up of four parts:
• Gas usage
• Standing charges
• Carbon tax
• VAT

Gas Usage
To work out the cost for your usage you’ll need :
• The ‘Present Reading’ from your last bill (found under ‘Usage Details’).
• A current meter reading (take in the last 3 days)
• Your unit rate.(can be found on your most recent bill)
• The conversion factor (approx. 11)

You will need to convert your gas reading to meters cubed. You can do this using the conversion factor. Every read would have their own conversion factor from when the read is taken, however as an estimate we can use a baseline of 11.000.

To estimate the gas charges, you can use the following formula:
(Current Meter Reading- last Present meter reading) x Conversion Factor (use 11 as an estimate) x Unit rate.

Standing charges
Standing charges are calculated by the number of days in your billing period. Our current gas standing charges are 38.28 cents per day (excluding VAT).

Carbon tax
Carbon tax is calculated at €0.00877 per kWh (excluding VAT)

VAT
Once you have the total of your usage, standing charges and carbon tax, you can calculate the VAT at 9% of the total figure.

Note: Remember, this will just be an estimate as the conversion factor varies based on a number of factors and your actual bill may differ slightly.
