Understanding your bill

How do I estimate my next bill?

Your electricity bill is generally made up of three parts:
• Electricity usage
• Standing Charges (applicable to Economy 7 customers only)
• VAT

Electricity Usage
To estimate the cost of your usage, you’ll need
• The ‘Present Reading’ from your last bill (found under ‘Usage Details’)
• A current meter reading (taken in the last 3 days).
• Your unit rate (this can be found on your previous bill under ‘Details of Electricity Charges’)

To calculate the cost for your usage, use the following formula:
(Current Meter Reading minus Previous Present Reading) x Unit Rate.

Note: If you are on Economy 7 rates, you will need separate readings for each rate. You will also need to repeat the formula for each rate and reading and add the results to get the total charges.

For example, the result of (Current Day Reading minus Previous Day Reading) x Day unit rate will need to be added to the result of (Current Night Reading minus Previous Night Reading) x Night rate to get the total charges. (repeat for Peak rates if applicable).

Standing Charges (Economy 7 only)

These are calculated by the number of days in your billing period (usually 30 or 60). You can find your current rate for your standing charge on your most recent bill.

VAT
VAT is currently charged on electricity usage, standing charges (if applicable) at 5%.
