Cleaner, greener energy is in SSE Airtricity’s DNA. As far back as the 1990s, Airtricity played a lead role in Ireland’s renewable energy development – from pioneering commercial onshore wind farms to co-developing Arklow Bank Wind Park, the country’s first operational offshore wind farm.

In 2008, Airtricity became part of the SSE family, which continues that legacy, harnessing our greatest natural resource - wind.

Our sister company, SSE Renewables, has developed and operates one of Ireland’s largest onshore wind portfolios, including our newest wind farm, Yellow River Wind Farm in Offaly, which produces vital renewable electricity from the Midlands.

SSE Renewables is also focusing on progressing its flagship Irish offshore wind project, Arklow Bank Wind Park 2. Realising the project would fulfil a vision more than twenty years in the making, delivering commercial-scale offshore wind off Ireland’s east coast.

For instance, our colleagues in SSE Thermal operate Great Island Power Station in Wexford - one of the country’s most efficient gas-fired plants - playing a vital role in keeping the lights on for homes and businesses.

A renewables-led system still requires flexible backup power, and SSE is focused on making this power generation lower carbon too. That’s why we’re investing in new thermal technologies. This includes a trailblazing project at our historic Tarbert site in Kerry which, once completed, will be the first power station in Ireland to run on sustainable biofuels.
