Our business was born out of a vision to bring you a different kind of energy – a clean, homegrown energy, spun from the air itself.
It’s the energy that made Airtricity an Irish trailblazer in wind energy development on land, and part of the team who delivered Arklow Bank, our first wind farm at sea.
Now, as part of SSE, our sister company, SSE Renewables, carries that visionary spark forward.
With 31 wind farms already powering the grid, including Ireland’s newest, Yellow River in County Offaly, SSE Renewables is focused on progressing Arklow Bank Wind Park 2. This continues the ambition set in motion by Airtricity over 20 years ago, harnessing our vast offshore wind resources to generate clean, homegrown energy.
Energy that keeps your lights on
SSE plays a key role in delivering a more efficient and secure energy system in other ways too.
SSE Thermal operates Great Island Power Station in County Wexford – one of Ireland’s most efficient gas-fired power plants – helping to keep the lights on for homes and businesses across the country.
A renewables-led system still requires flexible backup, and SSE is focused on making this generation lower in carbon by investing in new thermal technologies. This includes a landmark project at our historic Tarbert site in County Kerry, which is set to become Ireland’s first power station run on sustainable biofuels.
