Meter reading guide: How to read your electricity meter
- 24-hour meter (DG5 P5 MCC01): Reads at the same rate 24 hours of the day and has standing charge and PSO (Public Service Obligation) Levy.
If your RM number is 545 or 667 you may have the below meter. The RM number is at the bottom left hand side of the meter. The meter has an automatic scrolling electronic display. The display changes every 6 secs illustrating 13 different information panels. Flat Rate & Time of Day - use Screens 11, 12 & 13
The "RM number" on an electricity meter refers to the meter serial number, which is a unique identifier for your specific electricity meter
To read your meter:
1. Read the numbers from left to right, including any zeros
2. Ignore any numbers after the decimal point, or numbers in red.
2. Day and Night meter (DG5 P6 MCC02): Reads different day or night and has standing charge and PSO Levy. This meter type sometimes has a Wattless Charge.
Day 9am-12am Summer/ 8am-11pm Winter
Night 12am-9am Summer/11pm-8am Winter
Day/Night Meters have two rows of numbers to separately record the electricity you use during both day and night. These rows may be labelled as Day and Night, or 1/I (Night) and 2/II (Day).
To read your meter:
For each row, read the numbers from left to right, including any zeros
Ignore any numbers after the decimal point or in red. If your meter does not have a decimal point, read all numbers, including any zeros. E.g., The day reading for this meter is 12763, and the night reading is 07759.
If your RM number is 648, 651, 627, 553 or 551 this is the meter type you may have below. The RM number is located at the bottom left hand side of the meter. This meter may have an auto scroll feature that changes screens automatically. Press the button only if the meter has no auto scroll.
3. LVMD (DG6 NQH and QH MCC10): This is the most complicated meter that reads itself every 15 minutes (interval) or by an ESB technician (non-interval)/ You don’t take a meter read from this meter. It has many charges such as Capacity Charge, Day, Night, Summer, Winter, Winter Off Peak, Excess Capacity Charge, Standing Charge and PSO Levy.
What is a wattless charge
A wattless charge from SSE Airtricity is a surcharge applied when a business's reactive power (wattless units) exceeds a certain threshold, generally one-third of their active power general units within a billing period. This is because reactive power can impact the efficiency of the electricity grid.
