Proud to be part of the Games

SSE has a long history of supporting sport, and we're proud to get behind Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

As a Proud Partner of the Games, we want to make the Games fun and accessible to all our customers whether they’re spectators, athletes or volunteers.

But that’s not all; we’re also supporting four of the home nation’s teams. So no matter if you’re cheering for Northern Ireland, England, Wales or Scotland, you can be sure we’ll be cheering with you.

Supporting tomorrow’s athletes

At SSE we’re not just looking forward to Glasgow 2014; we’re also looking further ahead with the SSE Next Generation programme. Our aim is to support emerging talent and to create a lasting legacy for sporting excellence in the UK.

As part of the programme, we will be supporting 50 young athletes a year over the next four years. They’ll have access to funding and mentoring, helping them to achieve their full sporting potential. We’ll be following the journey of these future champions as they develop over the next four years, and hopefully we’ll be cheering them on in 2018 and beyond.

Supporting UK sport

But SSE’s involvement in sport isn’t confined to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. We’re also supporting sport in your local community. Our sponsorships range from a partnership with the Walled City Marathon in Derry-Londonderry to the SSE Hydro, the premier entertainment venue in Glasgow and host of the netball, gymnastics and boxing events at the Commonwealth Games.

In all, 4,500 athletes will be in action in Scotland for the Games, 15,000 volunteers will be in place and spectator numbers at the various venues are expected to be over the one million mark.

Bringing sport home

At SSE our first priority is to deliver energy and home-related services to the homes and businesses of over five million customers. But we also understand that as one of the UK and Ireland's leading energy companies, we have a commitment to supporting the communities in which we live and work. And by bringing sport to local communities, we’re hoping to provide a lasting benefit to our customers.

We believe that sport has an important role to play in building healthier, happier and safer communities. And through the example set by sportsmen and sportswomen, sport can send a positive example that young people can aspire to.
