We are SSE Airtricity

This is our story

About us

At SSE Airtricity, we’re proud to support communities in Northern Ireland to make cleaner, greener choices. We generate over 121 Megawatts (MW) of wind energy from our local wind farms in Northern Ireland including SSE’s Slieve Kirk Wind Park, Northern Ireland’s largest windfarm. We also utilise third-party agreements with renewable energy generators including energy from the largest solar farm on the island of Ireland, Bann Road at Rasharkin in Co. Antrim.

What we do

We all want to live and work in a cleaner, greener world. We’re proud to supply cleaner energy generated from local wind farms and using solar energy to power homes and businesses across Northern Ireland. By choosing SSE Airtricity, you’re joining the growing numbers of people helping to power a cleaner, greener environment.

In addition to sourcing renewable energy from 28 SSE wind farms across the island of Ireland, SSE Airtricity also has long term Power Purchase Agreements in place with third party renewable energy generators for over 300MW of renewable energy (wind and solar) sourced power on the island, including energy from the largest solar farm on the island of Ireland, Bann Road at Rasharkin in Co. Antrim. Over 58% of the electricity we supply to you is generated from renewable sources such as SSE's Slieve Kirk Wind Park, Northern Ireland's largest windfarm. In 2021, the green energy sourced by SSE Airtricity abated over 204,146 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions^.

We’re the commissioning supplier of natural gas to all domestic and small commercial customers for the Gas to the West distribution network, further securing the company’s position as Northern Ireland’s leading provider of natural gas.

Investing in Northern Ireland

Since 2008, SSE has invested over half a billion pounds in the development of Northern Ireland’s sustainable energy infrastructure, helping to make a greener economy and secure Northern Ireland’s energy future. Our transparency and commitment to paying a fair rate of tax, wherever we operate, means SSE has been accredited with the prestigious fair tax mark for 6 years in a row.

Since 2008, the SSE Airtricity Community Fund has provided over £3 million to 800 projects in Northern Ireland. The SSE Airtricity Community Fund supports communities around each of the 28 wind farms, that we supply our energy from, across the island of Ireland through an annual fund, which is distributed to local activities and projects with a focus on energy efficiency, safety, social and environmental sustainability. Between September 2019 and 2020 these funds have awarded over £700,000, helping communities in Northern Ireland benefit from cleaner, greener choices. The SSE Airtricity Scholarship fund has provided over half a million pounds to students in higher education in Northern Ireland since 2014.

In 2015, we announced a 10-year naming rights partnership with Northern Ireland’s premier entertainment venue, The SSE Arena, Belfast. Through our SSE Reward programme, our customers can access exclusive ticket presales, special customer lounges, and ‘money-can’t-buy’ experiences for shows at the Arena.

SSE Airtricity's sustainability strategy is aligned with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals to action the need to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the prospects and wellbeing of everyone, everywhere.
