Investing in Northern Ireland
Since 2008, SSE has invested over half a billion pounds in the development of Northern Ireland’s sustainable energy infrastructure, helping to make a greener economy and secure Northern Ireland’s energy future. Our transparency and commitment to paying a fair rate of tax, wherever we operate, means SSE has been accredited with the prestigious fair tax mark for 6 years in a row.
SSE Airtricity is the largest provider of renewable energy in the all-island Single Electricity Market. SSE Airtricity provides green energy to customers from 28 windfarms across the Island of Ireland. SSE Airtricity provides greener electricity, natural gas and essential services to over 300,000 homes and businesses across Northern Ireland.
Since 2008, the SSE Airtricity Community Fund has provided over £3 million to 800 projects in Northern Ireland. The SSE Airtricity Community Fund supports communities around each of the 28 wind farms, that we supply our energy from, across the island of Ireland through an annual fund, which is distributed to local activities and projects with a focus on energy efficiency, safety, social and environmental sustainability. Between September 2019 and 2020 these funds have awarded over £700,000, helping communities in Northern Ireland benefit from cleaner, greener choices. The SSE Airtricity Scholarship fund has provided over half a million pounds to students in higher education in Northern Ireland since 2014.
In 2015, we announced a 10-year naming rights partnership with Northern Ireland’s premier entertainment venue, The SSE Arena, Belfast. Through our SSE Reward programme, our customers can access exclusive ticket presales, special customer lounges, and ‘money-can’t-buy’ experiences for shows at the Arena.
SSE Airtricity is a supporter of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, directly supporting beekeepers, protecting wildflower habitats, and using wind farms to trial pollinator-friendly methods of managing weeds and pests. SSE Airtricity's sustainability strategy is aligned with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals to action the need to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the prospects and wellbeing of everyone, everywhere.
SSE Airtricity employs around 250 people directly in Northern Ireland, including over 200 people in our contact centre in Belfast. We’re proud to be accredited by the UKs Living Wage Foundation meaning all our employees are able to earn a real living wage. As well as that, SSE has created hundreds of jobs, and supported local supply chain businesses, through the construction of our wind farms.
