Dreaming of a Green Christmas & New Year

There are many simple ways to save energy and stay green over Christmas and in the New Year. Let’s come together to re-imagine the festive season and how we kick off 2021. Reduce our hectic buying, energy waste and reuse what we already have. Reusing, recycling and reducing. It’s easier than it sounds, here are some of the little things we can all do to create a more sustainable Ireland for everyone.

Decorations

Decorations Tips

The best sustainable Christmas decorations are family heirlooms that emerge year after year bringing wonderful memories flooding back. However homemade decorations can be easily made from recycled materials such as cardboard, bottles & old fabrics. Christmas wreaths can also be made using all the elements we find in nature.

To be really sustainable this Christmas, why not get a potted Christmas tree which you can add to your garden for the New Year? This way you are protecting our biodiversity and ecosystems.

Packaging

Packaging Tips

Reuse newspaper, magazines and twine to wrap, saving on paper waste and adding a retro twist. Gift wrap and packaging can create a lot of paper, plastic and glass waste. New year’s resolution tips: Having separate bins for paper, plastic, metal and glass means you can recycle with ease.

Gifting

Gifting Tips

This year, more than ever before, it’s important that we support our local communities and businesses. A small purchase or recommendation on social can make all the difference. If you’ve a large group of family or friends to buy for consider Kris Kindle, there’s less stress involved and, you’ll have more time to find the perfect gift.

Clothes

Clothing Tips

Being sustainable this season is easier than you think, its simply about making use of the clothes you or someone else already has. Why not organise your wardrobe and find new ways to mix & match or alter your clothes to make something new? Vintage items are easily picked up at virtual flea markets and online sites such as Depop. When buying new clothes also make sure to read the labels to understand if the materials are sustainably sourced i.e. local recycled cotton.

Energy

Energy Tips

Choose LED or solar lights this Christmas and try turning down your thermostat. Not only will this save energy and money, it’s a perfect excuse to pop on a cosy Christmas jumper. Simply reducing your thermostat by one degree can make a difference. Turn your thermostat down to 20°C in living areas and 15-18°C in bedrooms to save up to 10% on your energy bills per year.*
