Tavanagh Street in South Belfast received the award for ‘Best Street’ from category sponsors Airtricity and Corrie’s Jim McDonald at the inaugural Making The Difference Awards organised by the Belfast Telegraph in association with SPAR.
The winners showed true community spirit during the bad weather with young people clearing pavements of snow and ice and other neighbours bringing hot soup to the elderly. When the water shortages began volunteers got together in the evenings and weekends to deliver bottled water to those in need. Residents talk of the joy, pride and sense of security living in Tavanagh Street.
Wayne Millar, NI Domestic Sales Manager with Airtricity, said it had been a pleasure to be involved with such an inspiring event and praised the residents of Tavanagh Street for the time and effort they give each other. He said, “ It’s inspiring and rewarding for Airtricity to be part of such an important event”.
The Making the Difference Awards which were held in the Grand Opera House Belfast brought together an array of exceptional people from across Northern Ireland to celebrate the achievements of all nominees and recognise the inspirational winners.
