SSE is the fastest-growing and third largest energy utility in Ireland. Our core purpose is to provide the energy people need in a reliable and sustainable way.
We operate and invest in thermal and renewable energy generation, supply and related services across Ireland. We are currently constructing a 460MW CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) at Great Island, Co. Wexford. Expected to be commissioned in 2014 this modern and efficient clean gas-fired power plant will significantly decarbonise electricity generation in Ireland.
Our businesses include:
- SSE Generation: the third largest generation capacity owner in Ireland with 1,568MW in operation including 500MW of wind farm capacity (around 13% of all-island installed energy capacity);
- SSE Airtricity: the fastest growing and greenest energy provider in the Single Electricity Market, supplying over 800,000 domestic and commercial gas, electricity and home energy services customers;
- Airtricity Utility Solutions: Ireland's largest street lighting contractor, responsible for the maintenance of over 250,000 street lights on behalf of 25 local authorities in the Republic of Ireland; and
- SSE Renewables: the largest renewable energy developer in Ireland, with almost 1400MW of onshore and offshore wind capacity in Ireland in construction or with consent for development.
Our parent company is SSE plc, the broadest-based energy utility in the UK, with interests and experience in electricity and gas production, distribution, supply and services. The Top 40 FTSE-listed company has over 11,300MW of electricity generation, is the second biggest energy retailer across the competitive market in Great Britain and Ireland, supplying electricity, gas and related services to around 10 million customers.
SSE Airtricity is Ireland's fastest growing and third largest energy provider supplying over 800,000 domestic and commercial gas, electricity and home energy services customers.
At SSE Airtricity we believe in making energy better. SSE Airtricity is Ireland's greenest energy supplier. Almost one quarter (24%) of the electricity SSE Airtricity supplies to its customers is generated from renewable sources – twice that of its nearest commercial competitor and twice that of the total amount of renewables generated on an All Island basis. The generation of the electricity supplied to all SSE Airtricity customers results in 31% less CO2 emissions per MWh than the energy supplied to the average customer on the island of Ireland.
SSE Airtricity is powered by SSE including renewable energy from Ireland's largest wind generation portfolio. Over 500MW of renewable energy from 25 wind farms powers SSE Airtricity's greener electricity supply – including power from Ireland's largest wind farm, the 84MW Meentycat Wind Farm in Co. Donegal.
