What is involved in the meter replacement process?

What can I do?

  • You may already have Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer installed on your computer. We recommend you use one of the browsers. If you don't have any of these, you can download them for free.
  • Talk to your company's IT department, which may be able to provide you with an alternative browser.

What is involved in the meter replacement process?

Replacing your meter:

  • You’ll receive a letter a few weeks in advance of your meter replacement. 
  • If your electricity meter is outdoors and easily accessible you don’t need to be home for the meter to be replaced.
  • If your meter is located inside, ESB Networks will need to arrange an appointment with you.
  • An ESB Networks network technician or an electrical contractor working on ESB’s behalf will come to your property to remove your existing meter and replace it with the new smart meter. All installers will carry photo ID badges identifying them.
  • Your electricity supply will need to be turned off temporarily to do the work, for approximately 45 minutes.
  • A safety assessment will also be completed to the overall meter installation and, where necessary, additional improvement works will be carried out, at no cost to you.
