How to pay your bill
If you receive bills
You can make full or top-up payments using any of the following payment options:
- Any Post Office (using your barcoded bill)
- Selected Post Point outlets (using your barcoded bill)
- Selected Credit Unions
Through your bank
- Direct debit (to set up a direct debit, contact our Customer Service team)
- Standing order (You can set up a weekly, fortnightly or monthly standing order to pay a regular amount off your bill)
- Online transfer
- Phone banking

Make sure to use your 6 or 7 digit SSE Airtricity account number as the bank reference. Without this reference, your payments won’t be credited to your account, so be sure to include it.

If you wish to prepay for electricity
Some existing customers who are in arrears may be offered a Pay As You Go meter subject to meeting certain account criteria and property type. If you feel that you might qualify you can contact our Customer Service team on 1850 81 22 20 and they will check to see if you are eligible. We are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm. These calls will be charged at local rates from any landline in the Republic of Ireland, calls made from mobile phones will cost more.

SSE Airtricity Budget Plan is a free service which allows you to spread your energy costs for the year across 12 monthly payments.
It works because in the summer you will use relatively small amounts of energy so your monthly payments will be higher than your actual usage. Since you’re paying more than what you’re using, you build up credit on your account.
On the other hand, during the winter you will use relatively large amounts of energy so your payments will be lower than your actual usage. During these months, your account will draw on the credit you built up during the summer.
SSE Airtricity Budget Plan gives you:
- More control: Know at the start of each month what you need to pay
- More visibility: Monthly Bills let you keep better track of your energy usage
- No hassles: All payments will be made automatically by direct debit
- Less worry: No more guesswork and no large winter payments
The new Budget Plan is available to all our domestic customers who:
- Pay by direct debit
- Receive their bills by email
- Have one MPRN & GPRN per account.
How does it work?
Once you sign up to SSE Airtricity Budget Plan, we’ll calculate your energy costs for the next year based on:
- Your past and current energy usage
- Time of year
- Your energy rates
We'll divide this by 12 to determine your monthly payment amount. Every month you'll receive a bill which shows your recent payments, your energy usage and costs, and your account balance.
After every fourth bill we'll review your monthly payment amount to make sure it's accurate, and at the end of the year we'll review all your payments and charges - if your account is in credit this will be carried over to the next year.
It doesn't cost you anything to be on SSE Airtricity Budget Plan and you can opt out at any time.

Meter readings help keep your bill accurate
Your electricity and/or gas meter is read 4 times a year, so we rely on estimates outside of these times to calculate your bill. By submitting regular meter readings you can minimise these estimates and make sure you only pay for what you use.
If you can’t send in a meter reading, don’t worry. We’ll use the estimates when needed, and will update these when we receive the quarterly readings from ESB Networks (for electricity) or Bord Gáis Networks (for gas).
The best time to do it is just before you receive your bill
Submitting a reading just before the end of your billing period minimises the number of days we need to estimate. We can accept readings up to 2 days before your bill is due, so the last few days may still appear as an estimated reading.
We have free meter reading reminders
You can get electricity and gas meter reading reminders by email or SMS (or both). Reminders are customised to your billing period, so they'll be sent a few days before your bill is due. To sign up for and manage your reminders, log in to My SSE Airtricity.

Once you have your reading there are two ways to submit it:
Log in to My SSE Airtricity to submit electricity and gas readings and manage your reminders at any time.
These lines are automated and available 24 hours a day:
- Electricity: Call ESB Networks on 1850 337 777 (Callsave) with your MPRN number
- Gas: Call Gas Networks Ireland on 1850 427 732 (LoCall) with your GPRN number
- Electricity: Text ESB Networks on 087 960 9223 with your MPRN number, name, address and meter reading.
Note: It's important not to send us more than one reading on the same day, as this could cause your bill to be delayed.
