Fact sheets

SSE Ireland

SSE is the fastest-growing and third largest energy utility in Ireland. Our core purpose is to provide the energy people need in a reliable and sustainable way.

We operate and invest in thermal and renewable energy generation, supply and related services across Ireland. We are currently constructing a 460MW CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) at Great Island, Co. Wexford. Expected to be commissioned in 2014 this modern and efficient clean gas-fired power plant will significantly decarbonise electricity generation in Ireland.

Our businesses include:

  • SSE Generation: the third largest generation capacity owner in Ireland with 1,568MW in operation including 500MW of wind farm capacity (around 13% of all-island installed energy capacity);
  • SSE Airtricity: the fastest growing and greenest energy provider in the Single Electricity Market, supplying over 800,000 domestic and commercial gas, electricity and home energy services customers;
  • Airtricity Utility Solutions: Ireland's largest street lighting contractor, responsible for the maintenance of over 250,000 street lights on behalf of 25 local authorities in the Republic of Ireland; and
  • SSE Renewables: the largest renewable energy developer in Ireland, with almost 1400MW of onshore and offshore wind capacity in Ireland in construction or with consent for development.

Our parent company is SSE plc, the broadest-based energy utility in the UK, with interests and experience in electricity and gas production, distribution, supply and services. The Top 40 FTSE-listed company has over 11,300MW of electricity generation, is the second biggest energy retailer across the competitive market in Great Britain and Ireland, supplying electricity, gas and related services to around 10 million customers.

SSE Airtricity

SSE Airtricity is Northern Ireland's fastest-growing and second largest energy provider, and supplies around 300,000 domestic and commercial customers with gas and electricity.

A wholly-owned division of the Perth, Scotland, based SSE plc, SSE Airtricity entered Northern Ireland's commercial energy market in 2002 and became the first market entrant into Northern Ireland's newly formed domestic electricity supply market in 2010.

As well as being the country's No.1 business energy supplier SSE Airtricity is now Northern Ireland's No.1 gas and No.2 domestic electricity supplier. Earlier this year SSE Airtricity became the first competitive entrant into the Ten Towns Gas Supply Network.

SSE Airtricity is powered by SSE including renewable energy from Northern Ireland's largest wind generation portfolio. The company operates wind farms in Northern Ireland generating around 80MW of green energy, making it the country's No.1 renewable energy generator. Since entering Northern Ireland's energy market in 2008, SSE has invested almost £400million into Northern Ireland.

SSE is the broadest-based energy utility in the UK, with interests and experience in electricity and gas production, distribution, supply and services. The Top 40 FTSE-listed company has over 11,000MW of electricity generation, distributes electricity to 3.5 million homes and businesses and supplies electricity, gas and related services to around 10 million customers.

SSE Renewables

SSE Renewables is Ireland's largest renewable energy developer, responsible for the development and construction of SSE Group's renewable energy projects across Ireland €“ we build onshore, offshore wind farms, hydro, marine and solar projects and have invested over €1 billion in Irish renewables to date.

SSE Renewables has developed over 500MW of wind energy capacity across Ireland, including Ireland's largest wind farm, the 84MW Meentycat Wind Farm in Co. Donegal, to power greener energy provider SSE Airtricity and has almost 1400MW of onshore and offshore wind farm capacity under construction or with consent for development.

SSE is the leading generator of renewable energy in Great Britain and Ireland and remains on course to own around 3,500MW of renewable energy capacity in operation or under construction in both markets by the end of the current financial year.

SSE Renewables recently commissioned Northern Ireland’s largest grouped wind farm development in the 73MW Slieve Kirk Wind Park, which has been built at a total capital investment cost of £125million of which £36million has been spent directly with around 75 local supply chain businesses supporting local jobs and enterprise across Northern Ireland.
